Frederick Aunspaugh was born 17 September 1870 in Liberty, now Bedford, Va., to Robert T. Aunspaugh and Anne Clayton Aunspaugh. In 1898, Aunspaugh moved to Norfolk, Virginia. He worked as an agent in Virginia and North Carolina for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. He married Ruth McCoy of Suffolk County, Va., and Gates County, N.C., in 1906.
